Pirates get promotions, too.

Day 17

Captain Morgan was a pirate who went by the first name of Henry and who, in 1668, took over Panama City and parts of Nombre de Dios "destroying it" in a series of events where Scots, Englishmen and Europeans who were envious of the early trade success of the Panama canal sequentially invaded and fucked the city to varying degrees. These events occurred after the Spanish and the British Crowns signed a peace treaty, specifically so piracy and legalised "involuntary taxing" of the Spanish would cease. Morgan was called back by the crown and knighted.

This is my take away from the Panama Canal Museum in Casco Viejo today. More than the actual history of the canal this is important to me because it's a story I plan to tell in future when plugging in to the rum-drinking brotherhood.
